COLORADO SPRINGS — With a winter storm like Sunday’s, drivers need to stay off roads as much as possible. But not everyone has that choice.

For motorist Tom Roth staying home wasn’t in the cards Sunday..

“I’m getting a plane from Denver and going to Omaha,” Roth said. “I’m part of essential service.”

And for trucker Alex Xavier, it’s part of what he signed up for.

“I’m going to Albuquerque to Costco delivering some H2O,” Xavier said. “It’s like this pretty much every year.”

But it doesn’t mean his trip isn’t still treacherous.

“Coming up on, 287... It was like an apocalyptic scene from a movie,” Xavier said. “There was cars and tractors and trucks flipped over.”

He’s been at this a while.

“I’ve been driving it since 2006,” he said.”

So take it from him.

“Go slow, be very cautious, and be very observant around your surroundings because you know, you’ve got people that’s impatient,” he said. “And totalling your car is not worth it.”

Or take it from roth, who nearly missed his flight.

“Thank God it was delayed,” Roth said.

It’s worth planning ahead.

“I left 15 minutes early,” he said. “Should’ve been an hour early.”
